The important message that the movie conveys, which ought to be focused on by everyone, along with Taapsee Pannu’s terrific performance makes ‘Rashmi Rocket’ a must-watch. Chand is still the fastest woman in India with a personal best of 11.17 seconds. Born to a poor family, the job security allowed her to focus on the sport and be crowned national champion at the age of 18, Crasto says. “Dutee was 17 years old when I approached her and offered her a job. She latched on to it on the spot because a job is so important for athletes from small towns and villages,” Crasto tells The National. The trailer of Taapsee Pannu’s latest film Rashmi Rocket dropped on September 23.

Partially based on a true story or rather true stories, ‘Rashmi Rocket’ talks about women who excell in sports. In this movie, Taapsee Pannu plays the role of a woman who is an Indian track and field athlete. She is a competitor at the Indian National Open Athletics Championships, 2014 Asian Games and the 2016 South Asian Games qualifiers.

Also, it’s the Dusshera long weekend and this family drama is just the perfect break from all the overdone, high-octane actioners with the ‘burai pe acchai ki jeet’ over-the-top theme. We go with three and a half stars out of five for Rashmi Rocket. Taapsee Pannu plays the role of a runner from Gujarat’s Kutch who struggles a lot to reach international stadiums as a professional. The film is a fictional story and is directed by Akarsh Khurana.

She bumps into Niharika who once again taunts her and calls her a ‘launda’. Inspector Sathe claims that he got a complaint that a man is hiding in the female hostel. They conclude that the man in the hostel is none other than Rashmi. Gagan barges into the police station and releases her. As soon as they both come out of the police station, they find that the media has already arrived. The reports of the tests also get leaked and it proves that Rashmi has an unusually high level of testosterone.

And when the film becomes about this overarching fight, it is impressive how director Akarsh has no qualms in pushing his trump card, Taapsee, right back to the periphery. In the trailer, Rashmi is forced to take a gender verification test because people have tagged her as “mardana” based on her appearance. In this humiliating outdated practice, she is told, “aap apne sare kapde utar lijiye”. The test results declared that she has a medical condition called hyperandrogenism. Rashmi gets banned from competing in women sports and faces discrimination for not being conventionally feminine. The movie, unlike most sports dramas, does not just portray the nail-biting sports competition in the climax.

Taapsee Pannu proving her position, she has done a spectacular job stepping into the shoes of Rashmi. “It’s slightly reductive to find the mention of a gender test in a film and assume that it’s based on a specific person, because there is so much more to that person than this one thing that took place in their life,” Guha told News18.

Kanika Dhillon’s dialogues are one of the best things of the enterprise. The movie allows uncomfortable truths to surface by questioning society’s idea of a woman and documenting the emotional and physical toll of the ordeals of gender testing and discrimination.
